NbS Guidelines

Summary

These four simple guidelines are at the core of the definition of high-quality NbS and we encourage everyone to adopt them. They apply to any NbS project, but especially those aimed at climate change mitigation. They aim to ensure that NbS are biodiversity-based and community-led, and that using NbS for climate change mitigation does not distract from or delay urgent action to cut greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuels.

The guidelines were originally developed in 2020 by a consortium of UK organisations and now have over 40 signatories including major conservation and research organisations. They are intended to be complementary to the more detailed IUCN Global Standard for NbS.
