Heathland creation for wildlife

Summary

This fact sheet provides guidance on the creation of new areas of simple heathland vegetation on former agricultural land. It discusses where to target heathland creation, how to assess the site and its soils, how to reduce soil fertility if needed, whether to seed the area or attempt natural regeneration, and aftercare and long-term management.

Much of this material is also covered in the longer and more up-to-date guidance on ‘Impact of heathland restoration and re-creation techniques on soil characteristics and the historical environment’.
